When life hurts, get helpIndividual Counseling

Talking helps. It’s as simple as that. And that’s what individual counseling is all about.

When you find the right therapist, you form a relationship that’s open, authentic and trusting. You tell your story to someone who listens deeply and works to understand it accurately. That alone can help you understand yourself better and treat yourself with more compassion. The other thing it does is point the way for change — the kind of change that makes you happier and more successful.

But what if your boss is the problem? Or your customers or clients? How about your relatives and friends, all the other people you love who make your head spin or explode? It helps to talk about them, too.

You might say: “What’s the point? These people aren’t going to change!” Or you might feel it’s disloyal or petty to complain and blame. If you’re unhappy at your job, you might say, “That’s why they call it work! It isn’t supposed to be fun!”

So, let me make it clear why you talk about other people in therapy: It isn’t to blame them. It’s simply to see things more clearly, set boundaries, and to work toward mutuality and reciprocity. If you’re talking about old wounds from family and other loved ones, you work to accept what has happened, and change how you relate to people today.

As noted psychologist Edward Teyber points out, therapy clients need to do two things: change how they respond to unhealthy relationships and grieve what might have been.

When you learn to do that, you’ll be more successful in your career and in your private relationships. You’ll get more of what you want in your life and less of what you don’t want.
